Rwanda's soils face severe degradation due to intensive farming, erosion and nutrient depletion. This degradation undermines agricultural productivity, food security and household incomes. Farmers also face financial constraints when accessing improved seeds, tools and organic amendments needed to transition to CA+.
This integrated approach is central to BIOHARVEST's identity and effectiveness.
CA+ combines minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and diversified crop rotation to restore soil organic matter, improve water retention, increase yields and build climate-adaptive capacity.
VSLAs help households build community savings, access affordable credit, develop financial discipline and management skills, and create platforms for collective decision-making and empowerment.

We accelerate the adoption of soil restoration and climate-smart agriculture practices through farmer-centered knowledge transfer and practical advisory services.
Knowledge generated through our field activities is shared through demonstration plots, training manuals, community workshops, government extension services and development partners.
We establish Farmer Field Schools (FFS) that provide hands-on, season-long training in Conservation Agriculture Plus (CA+) directly within farming communities.
Our FFS model recognizes farmers as knowledge generators and leaders, rather than passive recipients of information.
We deliver structured professional training that builds capacity beyond core CA+ techniques and equips farmers with knowledge for productive and environmentally sustainable farming systems.
Training combines classroom sessions, hands-on field practice and peer learning, with curricula regularly updated to reflect emerging best practices.
We deliver specialized professional training that equips farmer leaders, VSLA committee members and community facilitators with the skills required to establish, govern and sustain effective Village Savings and Loan Associations.
We also train community-based trainers and mentors who can replicate the VSLA model and build local capacity for long-term sustainability.
We establish and strengthen Village Savings and Loan Associations to provide farming households with accessible financial inclusion and household economic empowerment.
We provide ongoing technical support, refresher training and link VSLAs with agricultural input suppliers and microfinance institutions.

Implemented in Musanze District beginning in 2025, Hinga Neza combines Farmer Field School training with VSLA financial inclusion. The initiative has engaged over 9,200 farming households, established 165 demonstration plots and facilitated 128 functional VSLAs.
Hinga Neza VSLAs have mobilized over 150 million Rwandan francs in community savings, enabling over 850 farmers to access affordable agricultural credit for inputs such as improved seeds, tools and organic soil amendments.
